Best GPS 2010

Okay, it's February, just after the Super Bowl. In other words, it's a little early to be declaring the winners for "best GPS 2010". Having said that, there are several front runners, which according to Amazon, will certainly be contenders for the title. Let's look at these in turn.

Best GPS 2010: Garmin Nuvi 780 4.3-inch Widescreen Bluetooth GPS
The Garmin Nuvi 780 4.3-inch Widescreen Bluetooth GPS is one of the hottest sellers on the Internet right now. Whatever it's selling for right now, I can guarantee you that you're getting a ton of features for the price. With the Garmin Nuvi 780, you get the widescreen and Bluetooth, of course. But also you get text to speech (actually says street names), multi-point routing, and 9 months free MSN real time traffic and weather.

Best GPS 2010: Magellan RoadMate 1412
Although quite a bit cheaper than the Garmin Nuvi 780, the Magellan RoadMate 1412 shares many of its features. It's got the widescreen and text to speech. In addition, it's got multi-point routing. The RoadMate is a slightly older series than the Nuvi 780s are, but I don't think that really makes much difference.

Best GPS 2010: Garmin Nuvi 755/755T 4.3 Inch Portable GPS with Traffic
If you like the real time traffic option of the Garmin Nuvi 780, you might want to consider the 755/755T model. It's got lifetime traffic! In addition, the Garmin Nuvi 755 has "Lane Assist" which helps you locate the correct lane to drive in when in intersections. Like the 780, the Garmin Nuvi 755 is very well priced.

Best GPS 2010: TomTom XL 330-S 4.3 Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator
One of TomTom's top selling GPS navigators is the TomTom XL 330-S 4.3 Inch Widescreen Portable GPS. It's being sold at Amazon at a very affordable price, especially when you realize how many features it's got. You get the widescreen and text to speech. But also you get TomTom's "Map Share" technology, which lets you modify Tom Tom's database. Also, it's got a great Help Me! feature, which instantly locates the nearest emergency facilities.

Best GPS 2010: Garmin Nuvi 765/765T 4.3 Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic
The Garmin Nuvi 765T is like the Nuvi 755, but with Bluetooth. It's a higher end model, but still very, very affordable.

Best GPS 2010: Garmin Nuvi 285W/285WT 4.3 Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Traffic
Again, if you like the 755, but don't need quite all the features, there's the 285. It's got the widescreen and Bluetooth. Also, it's got traffic, but no multi-point routing.

Best GPS 2010: Magellan Maestro 4700 4.7 Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator
The Magellan Maestro 4700 4.7 Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator is part of Magellan's Maestro line, which is a little newer than the RoadMate line. The Maestro 4700 comes with text to speech, Bluetooth, and multi-point routing. Also, the screen is even bigger than the Garmin's I've mentioned here.

Best GPS 2010: TomTom EASE 3.5 Inch Portable GPS Navigator
The TomTom EASE 3.5 Inch Portable GPS Navigator is sort of the "Mini Cooper" of GPS devices. What I love about the EASE is...well, its ease of use. When you turn on the device, you see just two icons. If you want excellent navigation, but don't need the other bells and whistles, then the TomTom EASE 3.5 Inch Portable GPS Navigator could easily be the right model for you.

HP Envy 13 - Is it Really a MacBook Alternative?

The HP Envy 13 is a premium notebook with a premium price tag. It has a 13.3 inch display, power efficient processors and switchable graphics. But does the machine offer everything you ever want in a laptop?

Our HP Envy 13 Specifications:

* Operating system: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
* Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor SL9600 (2.13GHz, 6M Cache)
* Memory: 3GB DDR3 SDRAM (1066MHz)
* Storage: 250GB 5400RPM SATA hard drive
* Display: 13.3-inch LED HP Radiance Widescreen Display with 1366×768 pixels
* Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 Graphics (512MB) with Intel X4500M integrated switchable graphics

Price as configured: $1,924.99

Build and Design
The HP Envy 13 sports a simple magnesium lid with no attention grabbing graphics. Build quality is good. The notebook looks and feels solid in your hand.

The Envy 13 isn't very upgrade friendly. There are no easy access panels on the bottom of the notebook which means that you will be better off getting the necessary upgrades when you purchase the notebook rather than trying to do it on your own.

Screen and Speakers
The HP Envy 13 has a 13.3 inch "HP Radiance" display which is remarkably bright. The display is glossy but its brightness compensates for it. In fact you can use the Envy 13 in direct sunlight and you will still find that the display is quite readable. Viewing angles are average.

The speakers produce clear, loud sound. But the overall audio quality isn't very impressive. Audiophiles should definitely consider investing in a pair of headphones. Alternatively they can use the HDMI output to stream digital audio to a home stereo."hp envy 13"

Keyboard and Touchpad
The Envy 13 keyboard is one of the best you would find on a 13 inch notebook. The chiclet style keyboard is full sized with a decent amount of space between each key. the keyboard doesn't show any flex at all. Individual key action is smooth and quiet.

The touchpad is a Synaptics model. It is large and spacious and comes with integrated touchpad buttons.

Ports and Features
Port selection is average. There is an SD card slot, two USB 2.0 ports, HDMI out and a combo audio jack. This is quite disappointing because most 10 inch and 11 inch laptops offer more. In fact given the cost of the notebook HP could have added at least one more USB port as well as FireWire and eSATA.

Performance
Performance is satisfactory, but it is nothing remarkable considering the price of the notebook. The dual core SL9600 processor has enough power to handle day to day computing jobs. Multitasking is also quite possible.

The Envy 13 has both integrated and discrete graphics solutions which means that you can watch HD video and play games without having to compromise on battery life. When the power adapter is plugged in, the ATI graphics solution will automatically get enabled. And when the notebook is running on battery power only integrated graphics are used.

Heat and Noise
Heat levels are normal. The hard drive cavity does get warm, but there is nothing to worry about. The noise levels are above average. If you need absolute silence at your workspace, the Envy 13 is probably not the laptop to buy.

Battery Life
The notebook has a 4-cell battery rated at 41Wh. It gets around 7 hours of runtime which is very bad for a 13 inch notebook.

Conclusion
The HP Envy 13 is no 'MacBook alternative'. It was probably built to be one but unfortunately it missed the mark completely. That said, the Envy 13 is one of the most innovative consumer notebooks that HP has ever produced. It has a number of plus points including a great keyboard, impressive build quality, good battery life and an attractive design. On the flip side it lacks a number of ports and is more expensive than the 13 inch MacBook Pro.

Buying A Dell Inspiron 1520 Notebook? Read This First

The Dell Inspiron 1520 is one of the most popular Notebooks at the moment. When you shop online at Dell there are a few things you need to keep in mind. The first thing to note is that the "Deals of the Week" change in offer and it sometimes is better to wait the next week. Some weeks it maybe an extra 1Gb of RAM free or an upgraded hard disk other times it could be $100 off or a free Bluetooth mouse or Targus bag. Depending on the special it maybe better to hold off for a better deal. For instance a $100 off on a separate monitor may not be as useful as more RAM on the Notebook, unfortunately it's a bit of a gamble as you don't know what is coming up. Dell do provide the date of when the deal ends so you may have to act by this date.

Don't buy RAM or Hard Disks from Dell... unless they are on special. They're more expensive than buying outside. For the same price for the upgrade of the hard disk you keep the hard disk on the standard Inspiron build and bought a new third party 160Gb 7200RPM hard disk and still have some spare change. Btw Vista eats RAM like no tomorrow so it's worth getting at least 2Gb's especially if you are gonna have Aero turned on.

Sometimes they offer the a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy. This is NOT hardware and just an application CD that gives the chipset extra features. Really useful stuff like Bathroom Reverb or something. The chipset still appears as a SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio and NOT a SoundBlaster Audigy.

Oh another thing. The DELLay. It's all over the Interweb. There have been massive delays in the ordering process of the colored Inspirons. They appear to be coming through now but a few times the order specifically mentions 6-8 week delay for certain colors. Unless you order White or Black (sometimes without the webcam) then you may have to wait. Apparently this is because the spraying process is similar to that of a car and is a very slow procedure. The white ones which seem more available than say blue or green actually has more coats of paint because it's a gloss sheen. Sadly no other color has this gloss coating. Also the colour only applies to the lid of the Notebook, everything else including the keyboard is silver and the underside is black. These delays obviously don't deter Dell in still advertising the Inspiron creating more customer backlogs.

Choosing the Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor? If you can afford it go for the Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2.0Ghz and above. Obviously they are a faster clock speed with a 800mhz Front Side Bus (FSB) as opposed to the 667mhz of the T5450 1.66 Ghz. They also have 4mb of cache instead of 2mb which makes a difference.

The 15.4" WXGA+ 1440x900 Widescreen with Truelife is worth going for. The resolution is crisp and not too small. The 1680x1050 option maybe overkill as the monitor is too small for that resolution (a lot of 20.1" monitors are that res). Also LCD's look the best at its native resolution so playing games and having to turn the res down ain't gonna look pretty. The LCD is the glossy type which seems to be easier to wipe off fingerprints than the matt ones but are more prone to reflection. Think carefully before buying a 17" version. They are heavy and sometimes you can get and 15.4" and a separate Dell 17" monitor for about the same price.

The Dell Inspiron 1520 as a Gaming Notebook.

We'll it's actually quite good (for a Notebook). The Nvidia 8600m GT works well enough it has 256mb GDDR2. You cannot use shared RAM to increase the graphics RAM either. There are some online debates saying some do come with GDDR3 but to be certain the Asus G1 and G2 do have GDDR3 but are much more expensive. If you've got money to burn there's also the Toshiba X205 with the 8700M GT. Strangely the so called Dell Gaming Notebook the XPS series don't currently have the Geforce 8 series and go up only to the Geforce Go 7950 GTX which is really baffling. There is less wait time on a XPS though. The 7950 GTX is actually more powerful than the 8600 GT but only has the DX9 code path compared to the 8 series DX10. As mentioned before the 8600M GT would struggle with more recent games at the 1680x1050 resolution and DX10 games would choke. The Inspiron gets reasonably warm when playing games hard you can feel a warm air pushed out through the side vent. Good in winter as a fan heater.

Replacing Vista with XP

This is a real world of hurt. Until Vista SP1 arrives I want to get every bit of performance out of the Inspiron and Vista just doesn't cut the mustard. At the time I bought mine they weren't offering XP but now they recently have started. It was either Vista Home Basic or Home Premium. The Forceware Nvidia drivers for the 8 series off the Nvidia website DO NOT work. There is only now an 8 series drivers for XP on the Dell website previous to this there was a nice hacked version here: http://www.tweakforce.com

The Creative/SigmaTel audio driver is worse. Real hard to find and SigmaTel don't support the public so it's up to Dell. So after trying a few that were supposed to work I finally found one on the Dell website http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R153908&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=205136 from the Dell Community site. This ain't listed under XP drivers on the Dell Inspiron driver downloads.

When booting an XP CD up it immediately crashed with a PCI.SYS error. I then had to Slipstream a XP build with SP2. After that I had to add Dell SATA drivers to the image. Then download pretty much all the other drivers from the Dell site. Maybe they have rectified that now with the inclusion of XP.

The Good

A really cheap laptop for the components you get and one of the best gaming laptops available.
The build quality is pretty good.

Nice looking.

You get what you ordered online pretty much delivered with Dell. For me nothing was missing or the wrong hardware.

The tracking of delivery is reasonably accurate and I manage to get it a day before the expected arrival date.

The Dell Service Tag is a good feature and allows you to enter your Notebooks Service Tag into their website which will bring up the details of your hardware.

There is a fair bit of documentation, driver CD's and DVD's.

You get the actual DVD for the OS.

The BIOS isn't too bad (for Dell) there are a fair bit of options. But you can't seem to tweak the CPU or RAM in anyway. So no OCing.

The WiFi seems pretty good, it's got three aerials built in. There's also a slider that turns off WiFi if not needed. You also get Bluetooth.

There are some speaker and play buttons on the front panel that are pretty convenient. The Notebook sound itself is quite good.

The keyboard is pretty good though a little cramped considering the size of the laptop. Not too spongey and they look like they are clipped on pretty well compared to some of the Lenovo ThinkPads which have fiddlely little clips if the keys accidentally fall off.

The Targus bag for cheap.

The Bad

The DELLay on certain colors.

The delivery wait when ordering online on a normal day.

The initial build on the Inspiron 1520 which was Vista Home Basic is full of bloatware. Like the Google Desktop search and Norton's Anti-Virus with a limited subscription.

Dell's XP driver support is all over the place. Maybe they've fixed this now by selling it with XP, dunno.

Your 120Gb or 160Gb hard disk is divided into three partitions at the factory. A hidden recovery one and a C: and D:. The D: has some drivers and a recovery for Windows to reinstall to factory defaults. Yuck.

If you want a Track Point you will need to go to the Lattitude series (under the Business option) or shell out some serious money for a ThinkPad. With the Inspirons your stuck with a Thermal Pad. I personally don't like em but some do.

The Dell Inspiron is pretty heavy and coupled with the large-ish power supply it's borderline for lugging around in a backpack all day as a student.

The Ugly

The black one looks too plain. When you buy an Inspiron you gotta get a colored one (if you can endure the wait)!

Garmin Nuvi 760 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Automobile Navigator

I have been using the Garmin Nuvi 660 for the past few years and have decided to upgrade to the new Garmin Nuvi 760 last week. Both 660 and 760 models are still available in the market and it can be a pretty daunting task choosing between the two. The 760 is about $100 bucks more expensive than the older model, but for those for frequently use their GPS navigator, let me say that the 760 is well worth its price. It has all the function of the Garmin 760 and much more. Here is a quick list of the new and improved functions found on the new 760 model.

In the new Garmin 760, one of the biggest improvements can be seen in the fonts used to display the street names. Although this may seem to be a small change, but the new font has greater visibility compared to the one in the older model. With the new font, the street names can be deciphered through a quick glance while driving.

In the older model, the zoom mode is quite a nightmare. When zoomed in on the 660 models, the road that you are on is magnified so much that it makes it difficult to see the other streets nearby. This makes the zoom feature pretty useless in places where you need to make several turns within short distances. This flaw was fixed in the new Garmin Nuvi 760. When zoomed in on 3D mode, the magnification in adjusted so that you can still easily view all the other roads nearby.

The new Garmin 760 has a sleek and cleaner design. Unlike the 660, the new model does not have an antenna. It is also much easier to mount and dismount the navigator from its stand. The power socket of the new model is also conveniently relocated to the bottom of the unit, which makes it much easier to plug the charger in.

Most important of all, the new model is just a better navigator than the older model. It anytime from 45 to 2 minutes for the 660 model to lock on to the satellite. With the Garmin Nuvi 760, it takes less than 20 seconds to lock on, very useful when you are in a hurry. The new model also have a stronger signal where you can easily receive a satellite lock on even when you are indoors.

Check Out Garmin nüvi 885T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with MSN Direct Service (Factory Refurbished) for $499.99

Garmin nüvi 885T 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with MSN Direct Service (Factory Refurbished) Review

I reviewed many GPS units to become my first GPS. Within my price range, the 885T was the best. I bought a refurbished unit from Amazon. I see the price went back up, too. I got a bargain! Although, I saw right after I bought it that Garmin discontinued it. Oh, well. They included the 2010 maps and nine months of the MSN, which isn't in my area anyway.

The unit has performed many functions perfectly:

1. As a GPS, it senses and locks to satellites quickly. The 2010 maps are not completely perfect, on back country roads, and new intersections, but I was able to run the length of the New Jersey Turnpike and it directed me to the best route, with images of upcoming lane changes. That was cool.

2. As a bluetooth device, it said my LG phone was not certified for use, but it connected anyway. It reads the contacts, dials and answers calls. Once in while it will forget to connect to the phone, and I will have to delete it and try to reconnect, with minor irritation. When it is connected, all phone calls come through the 885T, hands-free. Very cool.

3. As a music player, I can load music and books and listen through the FM radio. It worked, but I would rather use my iPod. Technology is always advancing.

4. Games? It has them, but I am not sure why. Should I be playing solitaire while I drive??

5. Walking: I used it on the streets of New York, and it found a clothing store I wanted to see. And a restaurant we wanted to find. It is a great little database to carry around. But, so is an iPhone, if you have one. The 885T is cheaper.

6. The remote button that attaches to the steering was not mentioned in the description. It came as a pleasant surprise that I can press the button and talk to the 885T. The other surprise was, it did not require "training". If I speak clearly, simple words on the screen, or the pre-programmed shortcuts, it knows what I am saying. It even can interpret spoken names of stores or restaurants. That is cool.

I love it. The English female voice is the easiest to understand. And the most charming.

In a year or two, I may need to next generation of GPS, but until then, this is the best.

Note: the feature of reading Google Maps and loading the location into the unit is awesome. However, you need to be careful that the address is correct on the map. Often, I found, the place I found and loaded was not exactly where it really was. That was the fault of Google maps interpretation of data, rather than the 885T. The 885T took me to within feet of where Google told me to go, but it was at times a quarter of a mile off. The solution was to use the satellite view in Google maps to make absolutely sure I was finding the right location.

Touch Screen Fails - C. Walsh - Reno, NV
Overall, this product worked and met my needs until it didn't. I'd previously owned a Garmin Street Pilot 2620, which for some reason Garmin Discontinued. It worked great. This Garmin (885t) worked well for the most part. I should have gotten one with an FM tuner (If you have an FM tuner, you can program your setup to play Blue Tooth cell phone calls through your cars speaker system. The internal speaker on the Garmin 885t is incredibly weak!)
The reason for my negative review is that after only 3 months of use, the touch screen failed. The on-screen display is telling me to use the touch scren (I was looking for a phone #) and it is frozen. Even after I reboot the system, the same frozen screen appears. What that translates to is that this product is broken. Oh well, live and learn...

Garmin 885t comments - mchonda -
I recently bought my Garmin 885t GPS. I am very satisfied with it over-all. It is very easy to use, setup and the voice control really makes this GPS unique above all others. Garmin is bringing out the replacement for this model, 3750T due out later this summer for way more than I paid on Amazon for my 885T GPS. The 3750T will have the voice control and bluetooth. As with everthing, you have to shop around to find the best price and deal. Even on Amazon, check often as price points change for the same product are common. I did this and found a superior price at the time I ordered (checked the next the day, the price point increased .00 dollars).

Garmin will honor warranties if you purchase your GPS on/from Amazon. EBAY purchases; warranties are NOT honored.

I have just returned from a long driving trip, I discovered more features and controls while using this GPS. Having business addresses and phone numbers in towns I visited was very useful. The ability to look up a business phone number and use voice control to directly call the location was extremely helpful (via blue tooth with my cell phone). Of course the GPS aspect really was helpfull even on Forest roads to know where your going.

I traveled on Interstate Hwys, State Hwys, County Roads, and finally Forest Roads (dirt) and the GPS always knew the road 99.99 % and all of the side roads with superior accuracy. I did update the maps (one free from Garmin) before my trip to get the very latest maps. Speed limit posting on the GPS was accurate and useful.
Overall accuracy in all respects is superior.

The only weak point for this GPS is the FM transmitter which allows you to tune your GPS and Car radio to the same FM freq. to hear the spoken voice, phone calls etc, thru you car sound system. I tested this feature, found the signal between the GPS and my car radio had noise levels which were unacceptable. Will test again.

Finally, the MSN service will end 1/1/2012, but Garmin has a replacement car adaptor you can purchase for the 885T which brings in the new service (free) Garmin is providing for traffic and services similar to the MSN service. So it is up-ward compatable with the new Garmin service. This adaptor replaces the car adaptor and sell for around .00ish dollars. I will decide on this option later.

I would recommend this "flag ship" GPS to anyone, obviously voice control is expensive, but I believe it make this unit more safe to use on the road. Enjoy!! BTW, Garmin is a leader in GPS products, I also have a hand held GPS I've had for years, again same experience wt the Etrex Legend unit.

Garmin GPS - Pandora Shopper - Washington State USA
Fun Fun Fun. Love this GPS. Refurbished and good as new. I have bought a number of refurbished items and have not had any bad experiences with a single one. Try it, you'll like it.
