If you want to get the right GPS for your budget and needs, but you don't want to become an expert in global positioning technology, then read on. In this article, I'm going to talk about a few of the top selling GPS devices, give you a little run through of their features and current selling price. With that information, you'll know more about what's the best GPS to purchase.

What's the Best GPS to Purchase: Garmin

Over the course of the past couple of years, Garmin as run away with the US market. They were always the industry leaders, but with great innovations and also dropping prices on their devices dramatically over the past year, Garmin has solidified their market share. What does this mean to you in relationship to what's the best GPS to purchase? The fact of the matter for US buyers Garmin has a large number of models to choose from at some very competitive prices. A couple of Garmins you need to be aware of are the Garmin nüvi 285W and the Garmin nüvi 765.

The nüvi 285W has the wide screen, has Bluetooth, and also comes with a 9 month subscription to MSN real time traffic and weather. Right now, it's only selling for slightly over $100! What a deal! The nüvi 765 has everything the 285W has, but also includes multi-point routing and fm transmission. Multi-point routing lets you enter more than one destination in your device at a time. FM transmission lets you route your device's output through your car's stereo system.

What's the Best GPS to Purchase: Magellan and TomTom

As far a TomTom and Magellan, right now, there's not a lot of competition between them and Garmin for the top selling GPS devices. That doesn't mean you have to buy a Garmin. Both TomTom and Magellan have excellent reasons to buy them. TomTom has a sort of user-generated map technology, which results in their maps being more up-to-date, while Magellan has an excellent relationship with the Triple A, that let's them offer the Tour Book right on their device (for members only).

At the moment, the top selling TomTom is the TomTom One 130. It sells for only about $60, has excellent maps and a data base of millions of pre-programmed points of interest. But it doesn't have much else. It's sort of stripped down GPS navigation. Magellan's top selling model is the Maestro 4700, which is currently running a little more than $150. It's got the Tour Book, the wide screen, and Bluetooth. This is certainly a model that must be included in any discussion of what's the best GPS to purchase.

Do you want to know what's the best vehicle GPS on the market? Well, I'm going to try to answer that question in this article. In reality, that's probably not a question that can be completely answered, though. Let me tell you why.

For one thing, the whole idea of being the best vehicle GPS on the market depends on your needs and also your budget. Suppose I said that a Garmin nuvi 755 was the best GPS. Well, it currently sells for slightly under $200 at Amazon. But what if you can't afford that...or don't want to? Does that mean that the GPS you buy is going to be garbage? I don't think that's what we want to mean when we say "best GPS".

So, instead of saying that a particular model is the best, let's look at a spectrum of models, inexpensive, moderately priced, and higher end.

Best Vehicle GPS: Inexpensive Models

Before the TomTom EASE came to the marketplace, I would have awarded this position to one of the Garmins. But the TomTom EASE is really a step in the right direction. It has everything that I would consider to be essential in a best vehicle GPS, but it's not expensive at all.

Best Vehicle GPS: Moderately Priced Models

I know a lot of folks would award this category to one of Garmin's many models, but here, I have to go with Magellan. Probably something like the Magellan Maestro 4700. It costs about $150 as of the writing of this article. It has all the bells and whistles you could want. You know, widescreen, Bluetooth, etc. And it's got access to the Triple A Tour Book, if you're a member. I'm partial to the Triple A, so I like that feature.

Best Vehicle GPS: High-End Models

As usual, the high end belongs to Garmin. Personally, my vote for the best vehicle GPS in this category goes to the Garmin nuvi 1690. I really like all of the features of this device! You've can use it with public transportation, and also in select "tourist" cities, you can use it as a pedestrian. Of course, it's got all the other stuff as well.

So, although we can't say definitively what the best overall vehicle GPS is, we can talk about what are excellent choices in the various categories I have here. Buy any of these three! You won't go wrong.
